The impact of UV radiation on the skin: International congress focuses on latest research

The ESP Congress, which took place in Lyon, centered around photobiology and the most recent research, technological breakthroughs, and their practical applications. Several researchers from the Danish Research Center for Skin Cancer made valuable contributions through their presentations.

The European Society for Photobiology (ESP) held its 20th congress last week, where the Danish Research Center for Skin Cancer was very well-represented with participation and presentations from associate professor Catharina M. Lerche, senior researcher Peter Philipsen, medical engineer Jakob Heydenreich, PhD student Celina Pihl and postdoc Jonatan Riber Granborg. The congress was held at the 'National Institute of Applied Sciences (INSA) in Lyon, France.

The congress is a unique international platform for the dissemination of the latest research, technological development and applications within photobiology, which is the scientific study of the beneficial and harmful interactions of light in living organisms - including ultraviolet radiation effects. The topic at the ESP congress was the effect of UV radiation on the skin, and the knowledge center's five participants gave presentations on current research projects:

- Catharina M. Lerche: Characterization of keratinocyte cancer by mass spectrometry imaging.

- Chairperson Peter Philipsen: Assessment of candidate action spectra for vitamin D3 using a set of lamps with spectra of different qualities and Action spectrum for cyclobutane pyrimidine dimer formation in ex-vivo human skin irradiated with UV-LEDs and measured by quantitative HPLC-MS/MS.

- Jakob Heydenreich: Electronic UVR dosimeters used to measure time spent outdoors.

- Celina Pihl: Oral supplementation with quercetin and fisetin potentiates photocarcinogenesis in UVR exposed hairless mice.

- Jonatan Riber Granborg: The accumulated UVR dose received on a sun vacation is directly reflected in the amount of cyclobutane thymine dimers in urine.

The goal is to find new preventive methods for sun protection and better treatment options for patients with skin cancer.
