Exploring bleomycin in derma-oncology with energy-based topical drug delivery

Aim

The aims of this thesis were to examine the literature on bleomycin electrochemotherapy for basal cell carcinoma, and to explore laser-assisted topical drug delivery and intradermal needle injection as routes of administration for localised bleomycin electrochemotherapy.

Study objectives

I Systematically review the literature on bleomycin-electrochemotherapy for basal cell carcinoma.

II Establish laser-assisted topical drug delivery for bleomycin in an in vitro Franz Cell study and assess the impact of laser energy-levels and drug exposure times.

III Investigate bleomycin biodistribution patterns, cutaneous pharmacokinetics, and tolerability in an in vivo pig study following laser-assisted topical drug delivery, needle injection delivery, and electroporation.
